Facts about Ashland
Located in Jackson County, Ashland is a city with more than 21,300 residents. Found along Interstate 5, the city is only 16 miles from the California state line, and is at the south end of the Rogue Valley.
Some of the earliest permanent settlers arrived in the area in the early 1850s, after the discovery of gold. Businesses soon followed, including grain and other types of mills. For a time, the community was known as Ashland Mills.
A line connecting Ashland with San Francisco in 1887 spurred more growth, and served as a primary means of transporting goods until the line was moved in 1926. A number of the older buildings have been restored, and are found in the city's four historic districts.
The city has continued to thrive, and is today home to Southern Oregon University. The arts are well represented with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which has enjoyed a continual existence since its founding in 1935.
